An international education job fair is an excellent opportunity to meet and interview with a range of different schools, all in one convenient location. But\njust as during the normal job application process, it\u2019s your CV that will\ndetermine whether a school wants to see you for an interview or take\ndiscussions further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nrecruitment consultants at Explore CRS sift through hundreds of CVs a year, in\nsearch of talented candidates to introduce to schools. They know exactly what\ninformation school hiring managers are looking for and what candidates can\ndo to prepare their CVs ahead of an international education job fair. Here\nare their top tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make an impression, fast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Recruiters\nand hiring managers are busy and spend as little as 3 to 5 seconds reading a CV<\/strong>. You, therefore, need to ensure that\nthe layout of your CV is clear <\/strong>and\nthat your employment story is coherently presented. Someone scanning the\ninformation needs to be able to quickly\nunderstand what you offer<\/strong> as a potential new employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lay\nyour CV out in clear sections<\/strong>:\npersonal information, education, teaching experience, referees and other\ninterests. Organise your work experience\nchronologically<\/strong>, starting with the most recent at the top. Don\u2019t forget to\ninclude employment dates<\/strong> (month and\nyear) and locations<\/strong>, as well as when\nand where you graduated from college or university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t go overboard<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\nappreciate that it\u2019s hard to condense a long and varied teaching career down\ninto a few paragraphs. It\u2019s important, however, that you don\u2019t include too much information<\/strong> in your CV. Try to keep it to a maximum of 3 to 4 pages<\/strong>. You need to\npresent only the absolute highlights of\nyour career<\/strong> and experience. Remember that adding more information also acts\nto dilute what is there, so keeping it brief will only strengthen your CV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emphasise your curricula experience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many\nof the schools that Explore CRS work with are interested in teachers with specific curricula experience<\/strong> so be\nsure to emphasise all the curricula and national education systems you\u2019re\nfamiliar with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although\nfirst preference will often be given to candidates whose experience matches a\nschool\u2019s criteria, many hiring managers do appreciate the similarities between curricula<\/strong> so it\u2019s always helpful if you can\nclearly state those you\u2019ve been involved with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Explain the gaps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nthere are gaps in your employment\nhistory<\/strong>, you should ensure you explain what you were doing during these\ntimes. There are a number of legitimate\nreasons<\/strong> for taking career breaks and very often these periods are spent\ndoing things that actually enhance your CV. However, unexplained gaps<\/strong> in employment history can sometimes ring alarm\nbells amongst recruiters and hiring managers, so it helps enormously if you\nclarify why you took time out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write out your acronyms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nthe international education sector, there are so many different institutions\nand academic bodies that it\u2019s important\nto write out the name in full first<\/strong> and then use the acronym after. This is\nespecially important if it\u2019s not a well-known or globally used acronym. You\nneed to ensure recruiting schools are able to understand your CV and quickly\nassess who you\u2019ve worked for previously!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Include relevant professional\ndevelopment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Obviously,\nit\u2019s great for recruiters and hiring managers to see that you\u2019re dedicated to your ongoing professional\ndevelopment<\/strong>. They don\u2019t, however, need to read every single PD workshop\nyou\u2019ve ever attended so make sure only to list the most relevant and recent <\/strong>you\u2019ve taken part in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t\nforget, however, to include the most impressive\nexamples<\/strong> of professional development, such as qualifications gained or\nparticipation in professional organisations, mentoring or research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spellcheck!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s\namazing how many CVs come through to the Explore CRS consultants with grammatical or spelling mistakes<\/strong>. These\nerrors completely undermine your attempts to come across as professional and\ndiligent. Make sure you check your CV\nthrough at least twice<\/strong> and if you\u2019re still unsure whether it\u2019s error-free,\nhave someone else check it too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use your CV at the event<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many\njob fairs (including those offered by Explore CRS) will include pre-scheduled interviews<\/strong>, so you will\nneed to ensure your CV is ready to give to your consultant before you attend\nthe event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When\nthe time comes for the event, it\u2019s a good idea to print out 10 to 15 copies of your CV<\/strong> in colour and on high-quality paper<\/strong> to\nhand out to schools in person. You never know what face-to-face connections\nyou\u2019ll make, and a CV is an important\ntool<\/strong> in attracting the interest of a potential new employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One\nlast useful tip for ensuring hiring managers remember you on the day is to include a professional headshot<\/strong> with\nyour CV. While this is in no way mandatory, it\u2019s a great way to make a lasting impression<\/strong> with school staff\nwho will potentially meet hundreds of other candidates on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
