Securing a new teaching position\nabroad can be tremendously exciting, particularly if you\u2019ve triumphed through a\nfrustrating and long-winded application process. It can be so exciting that\nit\u2019s easy to forget that travelling abroad and living abroad are two very\ndifferent things. Whereas when you\u2019re on holiday it\u2019s all about fun and\nrelaxation, moving overseas means you need to be mindful of the more mundane\npracticalities of everyday life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, feeling at home in your\nnew country is often the deciding factor in the success of a new assignment. You\u2019ll\nfind that a little planning goes a long way in staying mentally and physically safe\nand well when you teach abroad. Here are some simple tips to get you off to the\nbest possible start: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Make\nsure you are well informed pre-departure. <\/strong>There are always surprises (good\nand bad) when you move to a new country. It could be that shopping for\ngroceries is a totally different experience to the one you are used to or that\nyou are used to a lenient teaching style whereas now students are expected to\nabide by strict rules. Prepare yourself as much as possible by devouring expat\nguides, and reaching out to staff in similar situations \u2013 it can really help\nyou settle in.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
