{"id":613,"date":"2012-04-20T20:13:21","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T20:13:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/?p=613"},"modified":"2012-10-14T19:58:28","modified_gmt":"2012-10-14T19:58:28","slug":"international-school-community-member-spotlight-11-sonya-terborg-riverstone-international-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/international-school-community-member-spotlight-11-sonya-terborg-riverstone-international-school\/","title":{"rendered":"International School Community Member Spotlight #11: Sonya terBorg (Riverstone International School)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every 1-2 months <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/home.php\" target=\"_blank\">International School Community<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0will highlight one of our members in our <a href=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/20\/category\/member-spotlights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Member Spotlight<\/a> feature.\u00a0 This month we interviewed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/my_account.php?id=941\" target=\"_blank\">Sonya terBorg<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/my_account.php?id=941\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 3px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-04-20 at 9.58.48 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/04\/screen-shot-2012-04-20-at-9-58-48-pm.png?w=274&#038;h=300&#038;fit=274%2C300&#038;resize=274%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your background.\u00a0 Where are you from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was born and raised in the South Island of New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get started in the international teaching community?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A friend told me about Search Associates, I tried it out, loved it and was hooked!<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Which international schools have you worked at?\u00a0 Please share some aspects of the schools that made them unique and fun places in which to work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school\/607\/Vientiane_International_School\" target=\"_blank\">Vientiane International School<\/a> in Laos,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_main.php?id=438\">Bonn International School<\/a> in Germany, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_main.php?id=1172\">New International School Thailand (NIST)<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_main.php?id=69\">Yokohama International School<\/a> in Japan and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_main.php?id=1158\">Riverstone International School<\/a> in Boise, Idaho, USA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe your latest cultural encounter in your current placement, one that put a smile on your face.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the first time since leaving New Zealand, I have a car.\u00a0 That also meant taking the driving test again \u2013 not only the written test, but the practical portion too!\u00a0 Boise is a pretty rural place and on the testing day, we were driving around when my instructor pointed out a family of deer off to the side of the road, over the hill a bit.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure if it was a trick \u2013 would she take her eyes off the road? \u2013 or if he was just excited to share the local wildlife with this crazy foreigner.\u00a0 Either way, I played it safe and just nodded and \u201cHmmmm-ed\u201d enthusiastically.\u00a0 And passed the test!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some important things that you look for when you are searching for a new position at an international school?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A great leader is really important to me.\u00a0 I try and find out about the school leadership so I know that I am putting myself in a position where I feel I will be challenged and encouraged to grow as a learner.\u00a0 My priorities change a lot sometimes though.\u00a0 When I got the job at NIST it was my first time as an\u00a0 Art Specialist \u2013 I needed someone who would take a chance on an unknown.\u00a0 For my current job, it was my first time \u2018hunting\u2019 for work as part of a couple so options for my husband to work were high on the list.\u00a0 Now we have a third member of our family, our dog, Abby.\u00a0 Somewhere dog friendly will be a definite requirement for our next move \u2013 whenever and wherever that may be!<br \/>\n<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In exactly 5 words, how would you describe the international school teaching experience?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The job of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks Sonya!
