{"id":434,"date":"2011-05-14T21:39:09","date_gmt":"2011-05-14T21:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/?p=434"},"modified":"2012-10-21T11:17:36","modified_gmt":"2012-10-21T11:17:36","slug":"top-5-reasons-i-like-walking-or-taking-public-transport-to-get-to-places-around-a-city-instead-of-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/top-5-reasons-i-like-walking-or-taking-public-transport-to-get-to-places-around-a-city-instead-of-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Top 5 Reasons I like walking or taking public transport to get to places around a city instead of driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,2070992_2071052,00.html?iid=moreontime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Best and Worst Cities around the World for Public Transit<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I found this article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,2070992_2071052,00.html?iid=moreontime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> on the Time magazine website.\u00a0 The article actually turned out to be about cities in the United States.\u00a0 You can look at the best cities for public transit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,2070992_2070980_2070982,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and the worst cities for public transit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,2070992_2071127_2071099,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 The best city was Honolulu, HI; which I\u2019ve never been to myself (though I really WANT to go there soon).\u00a0 The worst city was Knoxville, TN; also another city that I haven\u2019t visited yet (not on the top of my list of places to visit, but I\u2019m always game for exploring more of the United States).<\/p>\n<p>Now on to the rest of the world.\u00a0 I\u2019ve lived in 2 cities now on 2 different continents, and I must say that I completely rely on public transport nowadays in my life\u2026.and that doesn\u2019t bother me one bit.\u00a0 Barcelona vs. Shanghai.\u00a0 One city beats out the other one though for more reliable and cheaper transportation.\u00a0 You guessed it, Shanghai is the winner.\u00a0 Though there is a lot of pushing in both cities, I\u2019ve been impressed with Shanghai\u2019s public transit.\u00a0 Usually I only wait 1-2 minutes for the next metro train!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been without a car of my own for 5 years now.\u00a0 I remember when I was living in the United States and a work friend of mine decided to go car-free.\u00a0 I remember him saying to me, \u201cI LOVE not having a car\u2026\u201d\u00a0 And I remember me thinking, this guy is CRAZY!\u00a0 We all know that most of the United States is lacking with public transportation.\u00a0 Where I am from, you literally need a car or your are not going to be able to get anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Now I think just like my old work friend.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I ever want a car again.\u00a0 Disregarding the fact that you can save so much money by not having a car, I think I have actually lost interest in driving in general.<\/p>\n<p>Top 5 Reasons I like walking or taking public transport to get to places around a city instead of driving:<\/p>\n<p>1. Getting the chance to go into narrow alleyways where cars can go.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/img_0022-12.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 3px solid black;\" title=\"IMG_0022-1\" src=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/img_0022-12.jpg?w=214&#038;h=320&#038;fit=214%2C320&#038;resize=214%2C320\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Looking over the shoulders of the people in front of you.\u00a0 Boy did she have excellent handwriting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/img_27121.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 3px solid black;\" title=\"IMG_2712\" src=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/img_27121.jpg?w=214&#038;h=320&#038;fit=214%2C320&#038;resize=214%2C320\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Some walking paths can be very beautiful.\u00a0 If you are in a car, you pass it by too fast.\u00a0 If you are walking, you get to take it all in!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/img_00291.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 3px solid black;\" title=\"IMG_0029\" src=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/05\/img_00291.jpg?w=320&#038;h=214&#038;fit=320%2C214&#038;resize=320%2C214\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"214\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n4. People watching in general.\u00a0 Where is everyone going?\u00a0 Where is this man going?\u00a0 Who is he?
