{"id":418,"date":"2011-05-24T21:32:38","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T21:32:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/?p=418"},"modified":"2012-10-21T11:26:04","modified_gmt":"2012-10-21T11:26:04","slug":"member-spotlight-4-noah-bohnen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/member-spotlight-4-noah-bohnen\/","title":{"rendered":"Member spotlight #4: Noah Bohnen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Each month <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">International School Community<\/a> will highlight one of our members.\u00a0 This month we interviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/my_account.php?id=558\" target=\"_blank\">Noah Bohnen<\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_list.php\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 3px solid black; margin: 5px 9px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/uploads_user\/1000\/558\/0_5580.jpg?resize=94%2C154\" alt=\"\" width=\"94\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us about your background.\u00a0 Where are you from?<\/strong><br \/>\nI am Canadian, born in Toronto Ontario.\u00a0 I have been teaching for 13 years, mostly MS, mostly math\/science.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get started in the international teaching community?<\/strong><br \/>\nI had taught for 4 years in Peterborough, Ontario and my wife, who is also an international teacher, suggested that we do a stint overseas.\u00a0 We loved the travel and adventure so much that we are still on the road 9 years later.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which international schools have you worked at?\u00a0 Please share some aspects of the schools that made them unique and fun places in which to work.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_main.php?id=299\" target=\"_blank\">The Columbus School, Medellin Colombia<\/a>.\u00a0 Colombia is truly a gem.\u00a0 Having traveled to over 50 countries, there is no place quite like it.\u00a0 When we were there, there were still very few tourists and you really felt like you were on a cultural frontier.\u00a0 The people are some of the kindest and happiest on the planet.\u00a0 I still have very close Colombian friends with whom I keep in contact.\u00a0 The school itself is one the most beautiful campuses I have ever seen.\u00a0 It is on top of a mountain, with views of the city.\u00a0 Its facilities are incredible.\u00a0 The staff is young and a lot of fun.\u00a0 The teaching can be challenging, but the workload is very manageable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/school_main.php?id=265\" target=\"_blank\">The Lincoln School, Buenos Aires<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the type of school where people typically stay 6+ years.\u00a0 A true international school where English is the lingua franca.\u00a0 The school is a lovely place to teach and work.\u00a0 Resources are good and the kids are keen to learn.\u00a0 Buenos Aires is a very nice place to live and raise a family with a ton to do, and abundant clean food, air and water.\u00a0 The travel opportunities in Argentina are excellent, particularly if you are a fan of the outdoors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe your latest cultural encounter in your current placement, one that put a smile on your face.<\/strong><br \/>\nI was supervising a school dance and when I started teasing some Latino 7th graders about which girl they were going to dance with, they calmly told me 4 or 5 names and added, \u201cMeester, we aren\u2019t Canadian, so we aren\u2019t afraid to dance with girls.\u201d\u00a0 Lost that one!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some important things that you look for when you are searching for a new position at an international school?<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Living situation.\u00a0 Housing, safety, medical, services for families, etc.<br \/>\n2. Opportunity for professional growth<br \/>\n3. Is it a true international school?<br \/>\n4. Potential savings<\/p>\n<p><strong>In exactly 5 words, how would you describe the international school teaching experience?<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Rewarding<br \/>\n2. Different<br \/>\n3. Adventurous<br \/>\n4. Dynamic<br \/>\n5.
