{"id":414,"date":"2011-05-28T21:31:07","date_gmt":"2011-05-28T21:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/?p=414"},"modified":"2012-02-26T21:31:42","modified_gmt":"2012-02-26T21:31:42","slug":"blogs-of-international-school-teachers-backpacking-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/blogs-of-international-school-teachers-backpacking-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"Blogs of International School Teachers \u2013 \u201cBackpacking Teacher\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Are you inspired to start up a blog about your adventures living abroad?<\/p>\n<p>Check out the experiences of another teacher from the moment they signed the contract to what they are writing about after a few years working abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Our 2nd blog that we would like to highlight is called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/backpackingteacher.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Backpacking Teacher<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 What an interesting experience living in Saigon and working at a young school that is growing and expanding.<\/p>\n<p>Entries we would like to highlight:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/backpackingteacher.wordpress.com\/2008\/10\/25\/what-do-i-expect-from-my-new-life-in-saigon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What do I expect from my new life in\u00a0Saigon?<\/a><br \/>\nBefore I head off for another overseas sojourn it\u2019d be a nice idea to document what I\u2019m expecting to find and what I\u2019m looking forward to. That way, down the track, I can review my expectations against a future reality. Most of what I\u2019m expecting is based upon what life was like when I lived in Indonesia.<br \/>\nI\u2019m expecting:<br \/>\nThe very poor and the very rich<br \/>\nA political system that exists largely in the background\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Worst thing that\u2019s happened to you whilst traveling?<br \/>\nHow about the time I worked in Indonesia managing a remote resort .. ah yes ..that one.\u00a0 I managed this remote resort on the island of Java. The country was in upheaval, students had recently been shot on the streets of Jakarta and my security manager came into see me.\u00a0 \u201cPak\u201d, he says. \u201cBad news. The local people they not like the resort making money on their land. They coming tomorrow to burn it down\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cok\u201d, says I, attempting to be calm. \u201ctime to put our contingency plans into gear\u201d. Thinking all along how absurd it was that I had contingency plans, for rioting villagers, ready to go\u2026<\/p>\n<p id=\"post-279\"><a href=\"http:\/\/backpackingteacher.wordpress.com\/2009\/02\/11\/reflections-on-my-new-school\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reflections on my new\u00a0school<br \/>\n<\/a>The physical environment is superb with well appointed classrooms, interactive whiteboards in each classroom, air-conditioning and a management team that is very supportive of the teaching staff. The school has real potential and for a school this young it has made massive strides in it\u2019s quest to be a leading school in Saigon. This can be shown by the number of teachers and students who have moved to the school from other international schools in town. It\u2019s an exciting place to be and makes for an environment that\u2019s both challenging and a pleasure to teach in.
