{"id":284,"date":"2011-10-02T19:49:29","date_gmt":"2011-10-02T19:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/?p=284"},"modified":"2012-02-26T19:49:53","modified_gmt":"2012-02-26T19:49:53","slug":"educating-children-abroad-can-be-an-expensive-business-so-its-important-to-start-planning-early","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/educating-children-abroad-can-be-an-expensive-business-so-its-important-to-start-planning-early\/","title":{"rendered":"Educating children abroad can be an expensive business, so it\u2019s important to start planning early"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International School Community would like to highlight another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/hsbc-expat-guide\/education-abroad-children-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> from the Guardian.co.uk website.\u00a0 This time it is related to international schools and how expensive they are to some families.<\/p>\n<p>The title of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/hsbc-expat-guide\/education-abroad-children-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> by Dawn Cowie: <strong>Educating children abroad can be an expensive business, so it\u2019s important to start planning early<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.guim.co.uk\/sys-images\/Guardian\/Pix\/commercial\/2011\/7\/20\/1311172585749\/Four-schoolgirls-walking-007.jpg?resize=460%2C276\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"276\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sections we would like to discuss:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood quality education is a priority for every parent but for anyone considering relocating their family overseas it can be a deal-breaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are many, many families relocating abroad each year (some during the middle of the school year), and we wonder if the school-factor is really a \u201cdeal-breaker.\u201d\u00a0 How could expat-to-be families really know the quality of the international school before they move abroad.\u00a0 Does the company inform them about the schools?\u00a0 There seems to be limited information out there to help parents out.\u00a0 There are a few review websites out there to gather information (http:\/\/www.gsgi.co.uk\/site), but more information is needed we presume.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what are the costs involved? Nat Price, owner of specialist education consultancy Dean Associates, says that if the cost of a day-school place at a private secondary school in the UK is about \u00a315,000 then the comparable figure for a place at an international school is about \u00a320,000, but the costs do vary from country to country. For example, the cost of a typical day-school place a private school in Abu Dhabi can range from \u00a38,000 to \u00a315,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One good benefit that international schools provide for their teachers is free tuition for their children to attend the school.\u00a0 That is worth around \u00a320,000!\u00a0 Too bad teachers without children can\u2019t pocket that money if they were offered the same benefit!\u00a0 But honestly, we think that it is a great opportunity for international school teachers.\u00a0 They get to send their children to what could be a great school, and for free.\u00a0 Their children will start to make some really great international friends and make some excellent connections that might help them later on in life.\u00a0 But back to the money involved in sending children to international schools.\u00a0 I wonder what percent of students at international schools have parents that are footing the tuition bill themselves and not their company.\u00a0 Would be great to do a survey on that topic!<\/p>\n<p>We found a great video on the world\u2019s largest expat survey. \u00a0This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.offshore.hsbc.com\/1\/2\/international\/expat?video=\/1\/2\/international\/media-player#video11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video<\/a> sheds some light on the lives of expats in a variety of countries.\u00a0 It highlights which countries expats found that they have the most disposable income, which countries where it was easier to make other expat friends, which country where it was easier to make local friends, etc.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>International School Community would like to highlight another article from the Guardian.co.uk website.\u00a0 This time it is related to international schools and how expensive they are to some families.
