A lot.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a trip every break. Then maybe another one. And why not squeeze in a long weekend somewhere, too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest\u2014many of us feel a bit uneasy if we don\u2019t have our next trip planned.<br>Even worse if we don\u2019t have two or three lined up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And worst of all?<br>Your colleagues have already booked theirs\u2026 and you haven\u2019t. \ud83d\ude05<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Actually\u2014<em>even worse<\/em> is when your colleagues copy the exact same trips you\u2019re going on. Ha.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cBut this is the time to travel\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And to be fair\u2014it kind of is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might not be paying for a car, insurance, or a bunch of other expenses you\u2019d have back home. You might find decent deals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Living in a smaller or more remote city? Get ready to pay a premium just to leave.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Those \u201ccheap\u201d trips suddenly aren\u2019t so cheap when every journey starts with an expensive long-haul flight just to get somewhere affordable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Are cheap flights even a thing anymore?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember when low-cost airlines were actually\u2026 low cost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now it\u2019s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pay for your bag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay for your seat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pay to breathe (almost)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not strategic about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>when you book<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where you search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and how flexible you are<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026you\u2019ll end up paying way more than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And of course, there\u2019s always that moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your friend books a flight for a great price\u2026<br>You go to book it 5 minutes later\u2026<br>Price has gone up. \ud83d\ude43<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So how much are we actually flying?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s be real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many international teachers are probably taking <strong>10\u201320 flights a year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And somehow\u2026 anything under 10 flights feels like you\u2019re \u201cnot really travelling.\u201d<br>(<em>Cue your friends back home rolling their eyes.<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So\u2026 should we travel less?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In theory? Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality?<br>\u2026unlikely. \ud83d\ude04<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A smarter way to approach it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you <em>do<\/em> want to save a bit more, it helps to understand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>typical airfare costs from your host city<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>which destinations are realistically \u201ccheap\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and when prices spike during the year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s exactly why we have a comment topic on ISC where teachers share real airfare examples from their cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few examples:<br><br>&#8220;A flight ticket to a destination within the country will cost between $150 and $200, and to countries in the region, you will need to fork out between $500 and $700. The most affordable airline is Ethiopian.&#8221;<br><a href=\"https:\/\/app.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/schools\/108\/sandford-international-school-\">Sandford International School<\/a> (31 total comments)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Sample RT airfare to the US is around $1200 USD. Most flights to US go through Doha or Dubai. You can also fly through Bangkok, Seoul or Tokyo.&#8221;<br><a href=\"https:\/\/app.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/schools\/91\/international-school-of-islamabad\">International School of Islamabad<\/a> (63 total comments)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Flying out on direct flights is not cheap. So a return flight to Manila leaves at 1:00 am (approx.) and costs $410. If one were to fly via Hanoi &#8211; a longer journey &#8211; the cost is nearly half.&#8221;<br><a href=\"https:\/\/app.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/schools\/2285\/canadian-international-school-of-phnom-penh\">Canadian International School of Phnom Penh<\/a> (28 total comments)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dakar\/ New-York JFK 800-1000$ direct, Dakar\/Paris 700-800$ direct, Dakar\/Brussels 600-900$, Dakar\/Madrid 300-500$.&#8221;<br><a href=\"https:\/\/app.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/schools\/160\/international-school-of-dakar-\">International School of Dakar<\/a> (201 total comments)<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final thought<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Travel is one of the best parts of international teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if saving money is also a goal\u2026<br>you might need to slow down <em>just a little<\/em> on the travel madness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or at least\u2026 pick your Maldives trips more carefully. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We all hear about the amazing savings potential of working at international schools.
