There are many things I am looking forward to about going back, foremost among them, being closer to our family, but there are many things I am going to really miss about Hong Kong, especially my job. \u00a0In early June I included an article in one of my posts that I wrote in 2005 about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maryloudriedger.livejournal.com\/88050.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what I will miss about Hong Kong<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0I\u2019ve learned there is a lot more to a place than you can read about in a book, or see in a television documentary. For the entire six years I lived in Hong Kong I was constantly learning new things about the city I didn\u2019t know before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/robinandrich.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international school teaching couple\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0experience working with Chinese students (as compared to students from the USA) is quite intriguing:<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/robinandrich.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 3px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;\" title=\"Screen shot 2012-02-16 at 10.21.43 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/screen-shot-2012-02-16-at-10-21-43-pm.png?w=480&#038;h=82&#038;fit=480%2C82&#038;resize=480%2C82\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"82\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do Chinese middle school students differ from US middle school students?\u00a0You tell an American student that they can sit \u201canywhere\u201d in the classroom and at least 60% of the students immediately drop to the floor.\u00a0 They sit on pillows, lie under tables, and tuck into back corners.\u00a0 Some sit on top of things too \u2013 perching on counters, desks, and begging to sit on the teacher\u2019s spinning chair at the front of the room.<\/p>\n<p>You tell a Chinese student that they can sit \u201canywhere\u201d in the classroom and 30% of the move with tepid enthusiasm to sit near a friend while the rest of them stay where they are.\u00a0 Those that move take seats\u2026 in another desk.\u00a0 2-3 students may choose to sit on the classroom couch, but nobody takes to the floor unless required to do so by me.<\/p>\n<p>A student of mine explained it to me on Friday by saying that Chinese kids are taught from an early age to fear uncleanliness and germs.\u00a0 Even as young children many of them play in seats at tables, rather than in groups on the floor.\u00a0 Therefore, it\u2019s engrained in them from the start to avoid the floor if at all possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you know of any other great, insightful international school blogs out there or if you have one of your own that you would like for us to highlight, send us an email at <a href=\"mailto:editor@internationalschoolcommunity.com\" target=\"_blank\">editor@internationalschoolcommunity.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What a great idea!
