{"id":141,"date":"2011-12-23T14:53:06","date_gmt":"2011-12-23T14:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/?p=141"},"modified":"2012-10-15T09:47:56","modified_gmt":"2012-10-15T09:47:56","slug":"exiting-an-international-school-and-giving-feedback-how-honest-should-you-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.com\/blog\/exiting-an-international-school-and-giving-feedback-how-honest-should-you-be\/","title":{"rendered":"Exiting an international school and giving feedback: How honest should you be?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes things are difficult or slow to change at an international school, especially political things or things connected to the host country\/culture.\u00a0 If a group of teachers is leaving at the end of the same year, sometimes the group would like to take the opportunity to \u201cvoice their concerns\u201d to the schools to let them know which school-related things should really change before a new group of teachers comes in and is subjected to those things as well.\u00a0 Sometimes the feedback is requested, sometimes not.\u00a0 Also, sometimes your voice has fallen upon deaf ears or is directed to the wrong person when the person with \u201cthe power to change things\u201d is not physically at the school on most days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theinternationalschoolteacher.ning.com\/forum\/topics\/exiting-a-school-and-feedback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-width: 3px; border-color: black; border-style: solid;\" title=\"Screen shot 2011-12-22 at 7.49.43 PM\" src=\"http:\/\/internationalschoolcommunity.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/12\/screen-shot-2011-12-22-at-7-49-43-pm.png?w=600&#038;resize=555%2C248\" alt=\"\" width=\"555\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Excerpts taken from <a href=\"http:\/\/theinternationalschoolteacher.ning.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The International School Teacher<\/a> website:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome questions for the IST community about exiting a school and feedback.<\/p>\n<p>Many schools conduct exit interviews for departing staff, and I understand that some could be more productive than others.\u00a0 What are your experiences with this?<\/p>\n<p>At my school, feedback is not universally accepted, and many staff are nervous about offering constructive feedback for fear of reprisals.\u00a0 With that said, many board members and administration would like to hear constructive feedback.\u00a0 Here is what I\u2019m considering: inviting departing staff members to compose an open letter to the board and the administration with specific feedback as to the positive attributes of the school, and those that could be improved.\u00a0 Feedback to any specific individual would not be part of this letter, that seems inappropriate, that kind of feedback should be asked for specifically from an individual who wants to receive it.\u00a0 Rather, this letter would focus on policies, programs, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose the idea behind the letter is that it would demonstrate a more unified voice, and would therefore be harder to cast aside at an administrative level.<\/p>\n<p>Is this appropriate?\u00a0 Am I missing something?<\/p>\n<p>As international teachers, we have a pretty unique situation in the employee-employer world;
