(Fine Arts) from Otis College in Los Angeles.\u00a0 I started teaching at a public school in L.A. in 1998 and never looked back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get started in the international teaching community?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2006 I made the decision to move back to my \u201chome town\u201d and applied for a job at my old school, The American School of Barcelona.\u00a0 I worked there for 4 years where I shared students and classrooms with some of the elementary school teachers from my childhood.\u00a0 My experience at ASB was a wonderful experience.\u00a0 Once I had those years under my belt\u2026I was hooked on the International School life-style.\u00a0 Our initial idea was to move to Argentina, where my husband is from, but when the opportunity came up to move to Brazil and teach at Graded, my family and I were thrilled to take on the challenge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Which international schools have you worked at?\u00a0 Please share some aspects of the schools that made them unique and fun places in which to work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The American School of Barcelona and Graded \u2013 The American School of S\u00e3o Paulo.\u00a0 The best part of ASB was it\u2019s location,\u00a0 Barcelona.\u00a0 Graded is challenging in a professional way, but S\u00e3o Paulo is a tough city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Describe your latest cultural encounter in your current placement, one that put a smile on your face.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Graded is very strong on offering Community Service opportunities in the area.\u00a0 I am the staff leader for one of those groups, in which a group of high school students fund-raise for and visit a Cancer Shelter close by.\u00a0 Every time we visit this location I am further impressed by how mature and resilient our students can be.\u00a0 It\u2019s quite inspiring.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some important things that you look for when you are searching for a new position at an international school?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Location is key.\u00a0 I look for a place that I can picture myself living for at least 3-4 years.\u00a0 In my case, I need to consider my non-teaching spouse.\u00a0 He can legally work in South America &amp; Europe, so I\u2019m going to be drawn to those areas.\u00a0 Another really important factor is the true savings potential.\u00a0 Each school has it, some more than others, and I\u2019m more interested in saving money than traveling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In exactly 5 words, how would you describe the international school teaching experience?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stimulating,\u00a0 unpredictable,\u00a0 addictive, \u00a0inspiring, challenging.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks Gloria!\u00a0 If you are a member of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">International School Community<\/a>\u00a0and would like to be our next member spotlight,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalschoolcommunity.com\/contact_us.php\" target=\"_blank\">contact us here<\/a>.\u00a0 If we choose to highlight you, you will get a coupon code to receive 6 months free of premium access to our website!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each month\u00a0International School Community\u00a0will highlight one of our members.\u00a0 This month we interviewed Gloria Hewitt: Tell us about your background.\u00a0 Where are you from?
